Former CFO, EVP Operations, Medical Mutual of Ohio

Throughout her career, Sue Tyler has built businesses and led financial and operational transformations in the insurance industry. Her leadership skills are based broadly across finance, operations, and P&L roles for companies ranging in size from startup to Fortune 100. She served for fifteen years as a C-level executive of Medical Mutual of Ohio, a $3B company providing health insurance and third-party administrative services.

Sue has taken her healthcare payer experience and passion for innovation to the early stage business community. She is an active angel investor, board member and mentor to startup founders. North Coast Ventures recently named Sue their 2020 Member of the Year. Sue now serves on the boards of two healthcare technology companies and previously represented Cleveland Clinic Ventures on the board of a clinical software company. Currently, she serves as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence for Case Western Reserve University.

As the Chief Financial Officer of Medical Mutual, Sue provided strategic and financial leadership that drove dramatic improvement in financial position and diversification through multiple acquisitions and new product introductions. Sue oversaw an investment portfolio of $1.2B and navigated challenging regulatory environments. In her role as Chief Experience Officer, Sue brought focus to the customer experience with responsibility for multichannel service delivery including call centers, websites, customer self-service tools and mobile capabilities.

Sue also served in finance and product management for a decade at Progressive Insurance during some of its most formative and meaningful years of growth and development. She left Progressive for the opportunity to be a member of the founding leadership team of a start-up business. Sue was promoted from Senior Vice President of Marketing to Division President when they successfully grew that business from $0 to $300MM with operations in 18 states in under four years.

As an engaged civic leader, Sue was recognized by the YWCA with the prestigious Woman of Achievement Award. She was also honored by the Ohio Diversity Council with the Top 15 Business Women in Ohio Award. She is a founding member of the Cleveland chapter of Private Directors Association and currently serves on the board of College Now.

Sue received her MBA and bachelor’s degree from Case Western Reserve University. She and her husband, Bill, have two sons. Sue is an avid sweeps rower and sculler. Her interests include adventure travel, scuba, cycling, golf and college football.
